Inspiring Story of David Porter, Chimney Sweep in London

I read this story today and thought it might encourage some who read this post. Maybe you never heard, but years ago in England boys would be kidnapped and forced to clean chimneys. All their earnings would go to the man they were working for.
David Porter was a chimney-sweeper of Yorkshire. He was kidnapped in early boyhood and reduced to almost abject slavery. But he made the best of what he could not help, devoted himself to the business with great energy, tact, and perseverance, and at eighteen years of age set up a chimney sweep business for himself (that did not depend on slave labor).
From childhood he had a thirst for knowledge, and devoted every spare moment to mental improvement. Business and knowledge increased rapidly.
As his means enlarged, he used them liberally to ameliorate the condition of boy chimney-sweepers, writing a treatise on the subject, and securing the sympathy of influential people.
By his persistent efforts and frugality he amassed a fortune, at the same time establishing a character for integrity and benevolence that gave him access to the highest circles.
He was no less a philanthropist than a man of business. Sir Thomas Bernard asked him the secret of his success, and he answered, ” By never having an idle hour or an idle guinea.” He is an example of success in one of the lowest occupations of life.
We can learn a lot from David Porter. We have it a lot easier than Mr. Porter, and yet we are so quick to give up and call it quits. I encourage you for 2008 to not give up but to work hard, like Mr. Porter, to make a success of your home business.
